throw back to the 80s when we were in grade school and pencil cases were COOL

so, i was chatting with clare on the phone one morning and she was wrestling around with something crinkly. and being we were on a connection to the UK as it was so it's sometimes hard to hear, i said, "what the heck are you crumbling around?" she said she was getting a new pencil. so since the sound i heard was cellophane, i instantly morphed to a package of nerdy mechanical pencils (which get called retractable pencils in the UK). then i started laughing, thinking about the kind of nerdy person who buys an entire package of pencils. pens i can see, but pencils? who uses those anymore? probably like architects and first grade math students. anyway, before i could adequately rip on her, she gave me more fodder saying, "i need to fill my pencil case". let's just say i spent a good part of the next 15 minutes having a laugh at clare's expense. it's has been a bit of a running joke now. she has even been moved to do another guest blog. so, i leave you to it enjoy... here it is, our first installment of a new feature piece i hope to entitle "A LITTLE BIT BRIT" p.s. clare also came up with the witty title. now, i just have to a)rip on her enough to make her want to get back at me or b) entice her nicely somehow to write more often.

Pencil cases and nerds

So, most of my friends and loved ones know that I love stationary and all the bits that go with it. I think this started at school when I collected rubbers (he he he yes that’s what us Brits call erasers) and stickers, why I don’t know but it did seem very popular with us girls.
Now the reason I mention this is that a while back I mentioned to Amy that I had purchased a pencil case to keep all my pens from falling out my bag, which met with much ridicule; I have been called nerd, geek and I am sure other names on numerous occasions. Then stupidly I admitted that it in fact matched my other stationary stuff, which of course increased the intensity of Amy’s ridicule, even involving others laughing at me – during one of her long and frequent coffee breaks I might add.
I was telling Lisa (oh poor me, poor me) about Amy’s taunts and torments when she pointed out that Amy has in fact got not 1 but 2 laptop bags and does not have a laptop.
I think the point is – at least I have a reason to own a pencil case, which I might add is very practical. Amy however does not have a need for a single laptop bag!
Now I think we know who the NERD is Amy
Oh and PS love you xxx

p.s. decide for yourself who the nerd is, here is clare's stationary collection and my laptop is on order, btw.

dear clare,
i can completely sympathize with you having to endure the merciless teasing of painty. and i don't think you're a nerd for liking stationary or writing instruments. and i don't think painty should make so much fun considering she always has a pocket pen and nearly has a coronary when she thinks she's lost it and used to carry a little notebook in her pocket with her everywhere.
feel a little better?

I feel more than a little better ;0)

Colonel - you got in before me about the pen in her pocket comment. i did not know about the little notebook though - a definite case of the pot calling the kettle a nerd.

i would just like to point out how 'ahead of my time' i was using a pocket notebook to keep notes, etc. it was merely foreshadowing to my beloved betty, dear readers.
