although i haven't done tons of hiking in my life, i am a huge fan. growing up in the midwest and having parents who took us camping and on cabin vacations annually from when we were potty trained, i have done lots and lots of walking in the woods.
i have been lucky enough to go on some great day hikes in colorado, iowa, wisconsin and minnesota. i've even stumbled along a few trails in australia and new zealand. i just haven't scraped together the time and energy to plan a significant hike. hiking on the appalachian trail has always been on my to-do list. i'd love to get back up to the superior and gunflint trails too, and i'm sure we will.
anyway, i digress. people sign up to do some crazy things and in a small way i would love to hang on their coat tails for the ride, see the adventure too. check out what karl meltzer, ultrarunner is up to here. he is taking ultrarunning and hiking to the next level. i hope he makes it, the whole appalachean trail in 47 days.
i think it would be cool to hike that whole trail start to finish some day, camping along the way at a leasurely pace. some 9,000 hikers have reported making it. somehow i don't think leeser would be up for that much walking or camping. maybe by the time ruby is old enough she'll wanna go with me?? we'll see.
anyway, good luck, karl. i'm pulling for you, brother! you crazy, crazy running man.

Wow! That really makes the 200mile relay I'm doing next Friday and Saturday seem very insignificant! And I was worried about running my 8 mile leg. LOL!!! Oh well I am not an ultrarunner so I'll be pleased to finish my 17.1 miles. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
