6 months down the road
So, I have been meaning to write another guest blog for Painty but life has been too crazy. Today is Ruby’s 6 month birthday and I thought to myself, “This is the perfect time for a guest spot,” so here I am.
I can’t believe our little girl is 6 months old today. It has gone by so quickly, but in the same breath I can say that it seems like she has been with us forever. She really is a beautiful shining ray of light, everyday single day. I am so grateful for my life at the moment so I am going to get all sentimental and give thanks to a few people here.
I want to say thanks to Painty for being the best mum in the world. The second best thing about having Ruby (the best, of course, is actually having Ruby) is watching Painty with her daughter. It melts my heart every single time I see them together. I even came home from work yesterday to see Painty in her new ‘Mango’ colored crocs picking up sticks from the front lawn while Shorty was laying on a blankie kicking around. The best way to come home – ever.
I also wanted to say thanks to Mumsie and Poppy for putting up with me for the 6 weeks they were here right after Ruby was born. I don’t think I was very nice to my parents during this time and I will use the excuse of being a nervous, tired and hormonal new mum. I love you both very much and can’t thank you enough for everything you did. Ruby loved every cuddle also and she can’t wait to see you again.
Thanks also to Grandma and Grandpa Mako who came a very long way to look after Shorty for Jen-Jen and Brad’s wedding as well as all the other times we have left her in your capable care. It really is a shame that she will grow up being a Viking’s fan though – hey Louis?
Thanks to Jaclyn for being the best daycare mum in the world, thanks to Ben Bloxie for being a good play buddy (even if he does like to make her hair stick up at the back), thanks to aunts and uncles for babysitting duties and all the pressies. And finally, a big thanks to Ruby’s pommy godmums who came all the way over from England to meet her and hang out for a week and lavish her with too many gifts. It was a wonderful week and she can’t wait to visit them in September. She misses you guys (we do too).
So – I can’t help myself (hey Painty), here is a list of some of the things I have learned over the last 6 months, in no particular order:
1. The love you have for your child is the most complete and absolute thing in the world
2. One extra outfit is not enough if you are travelling more than 15 mins from home
3. Little babies can make very loud noise from their bumpkins
4. Everybody (including tough guys who pretend they don’t) loves little kids. People will stop you in the street to have a look
5. Not all baby clothes are made the same. 0-3 months does not necessarily mean 0-3 months. Don’t believe what the tag says
6. BPA is a bad thing and it should be avoided in any products used for babies (and everyone really). Avoid plastic with the #7 recycle symbol on the bottom of it
Breastmilk tastes much better fresh than after it has been frozen and then de-frosted
7. Getting up in the middle of the night can cause you to fall down the stairs
8. A baby’s laugh is the BEST sound in the world
9. Having your baby roll over, or cut their first tooth, or behave well at church can make you the proudest parent in the world. I don’t know if her winning a Nobel Peace Prize could make me prouder than when she first rolled over
10. Babies will poop 95% of the time immediately after you change their diaper
11. Nothing smells better than a baby fresh out of the bath and all lotioned/powdered up
12. Teaching them to fall asleep without being rocked will create 100’s of extra hours of sleep
13. Sometimes they just need a good cry (don’t we all)
14. There must be a God – how else can the perfection of a little baby be explained
15. Last but not least, Painty is always right! (ok, i added that one, but it's mostly true. he he he.)
I could go on forever but I won’t bore you any more than I already have.
Ruby – thanks for the last 6 months and I can’t wait for the next 6. I am sorry in advance for taking you to the doctor’s tomorrow and them jabbing you in your little chumba-wumba’s with needles. I love you more than anything in the world and sorry about the mismatched outfit in the photo - but it makes me laugh.
